Today, another death of a legend! RIP
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility and by his son, Reason.He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers: I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame and I'm A Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

When I ran this one a few years ago I had someone arguing in defence of the coffee lawsuit
Wow!...
@trunthepaige - I knew it was passed around quite a bit I thought I might revive it ...shrugs...thought it might be good to remember that we need a bit of common sense...especially with some of the things coming out of Washington these days
Well this is the first time I have ever read it. And being a teacher, I have seen it the passing of common sense and my heart breaks.
hahhaha. oh man, this is hilarious, but true.
@LifeNeedsProtection - same here. also, i have never seen this. i'm going to have to steal it sometime. lol (and j/k..i would only borrow)
@BarryDadof3 - I am happy you ran it and I hope hope you don't run into anyone defending indispensable
I think common sense was murdered, and the perpetrators are sure to be along shortly to defend their actions.
@radicalramblings - I agree ... it was murder! We need a second autopsy!
Well said.
I can look at M.J. for his talent but no one should be that crazy about another human being who is a sinner like the rest of us. I admired Pope John Paul and Mother Theresa for making the world a better place.
The perfect post, with a perfect ending. Bravo
@radicalramblings - They're already here.
wow great post!
I came here on a rec, and I'm so glad I did! This is so very true. It's sad really...
@radicalramblings - i agree completely...
M wants me to tell you that another legend has died. Billy Mays...television spokesman extraordinaire; she will always remember his Oxyclean commercials.
@YouTOme - i am working on a post about him as we speak
@BarryDadof3 - seriously? or are you joking? b/c that may be enough to bring m back to xanga. she even has a page in her scrapbook devoted to him..
@YouTOme - He is serious. HE is working on a post. IT is so sad. He was so young yet.
@Kristenmomof3 - yeah, i'll admit i wasn't sure b/c as m was telling me about it, we were smiling over her scrapbook collection. i'm sorry for my lack of sensitivity. i apologize. =/
Oh my god. This is absolutelymindblowinglyfreakingamazing.
People really need to read the facts of the coffee suit before they condemn it. Do you expect boiling coffee to be served to you? The temperature was only a degree or two under boiling! She had third degree burns and extensive medical bills. Yes, she should have known it was hot, but most of us do not expect our coffee to be THAT hot. Last time I spilled coffee on me at home, I did NOT get third degree burns. Almost all of us have spilled coffee on ourselves at one point or another...how many of us had to go to the emergency room to be treated for extensive burns from it? Did you see the pictures in the lawsuit? Please don't judge this woman without knowing the facts of the case.
And parents should be informed of ANYTHING involving their childrens' health whether it is an aspirin (which common sense will tell you not to give to a child anyway) or any other larger reproductive issue...
Sorry for that little rant. It is a great post, and we do need to remember common sense.
@trunthepaige - that might be because if you look at the actual facts instead of what the media portrayed it to be the coffee lawsuit made a lot of sense.
